Emergency Research Center launches Let’s Get Ready! creative emergency awareness booklet for kids

MANILA, 22 MAY, 2013 – The Emergency Research Center in Manila has launched an emergency awareness booklet entitled Let’s Get Ready!

Illustrated by PC&V art director Ray Sunga in his private capacity as an illustrator and published by Anvil Publishing, Let’s Get Ready! was crafted to teach children aged six and up the rudiments of emergency preparation by providing them with handy directions on what to do in case of storms, floods, fires and earthquakes.

The approach of Let’s Get Ready! is different from that utilized by many similar materials. Its authors employ a creative approach – the book makes use of large and colorful illustrations, as well as fun activities and experiments, to help young readers learn how to prepare for emergencies, deal with them should they take place, and work to recover in their aftermath.

For instance, as part of the fire preparation section, children are taught how to tie shirts to stave off smoke installation “ninja-style”, as well as how to prepare an “e-balde” or a special pail that can serve as a receptacle for important items required during emergencies. Vital information that children may not be able to easily comprehend is presented in a fashion tailored specifically for young audiences, such as the color-coded warning signal alert system employed by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), which is presented in the form of an infographic involving rainclouds in increasing stages of anger to illustrate the increase in their capacity for rain.

Additionally, the book also provides opportunities for parents and teachers to help children along. Parents can help young readers answer the various activities, and teachers are also able to use the modules in the book during projects and classroom discussions. An adult supervision section at the rear of the book discusses how parents, guardians and teachers can contribute in more detail.
