Cannes Lions 2017: McCann New York’s ‘Fearless Girl’ wins Glass Lions Grand Prix

CANNES — McCann New York’s landmark work for State Street Global Advisors which featured the famed ’Fearless Girl’ symbolizing female leadership in business won Grand Prix under Glass Lions.

The statue of a confident and defiant young girl was an overnight success locally and globally when McCann New York and State Street Global Advisors (SSGA) placed her in front of Wall Street’s ‘Charging Bull’ during International Women’s Day. Her message is a reminder of the need to get more women on company boards and executive positions. Client SSGA also emphasised that companies with women in top leadership roles are proven to perform better financially.

Wendy Clark, Chief Executive Officer of DDB Worldwide, North America, USA and jury president of the Glass Lions panel commented, “The Glass Lion challenges our industry to shift and change culture. Perhaps now, more than ever, society needs to hear, witness, feel and be moved by messages of gender equality, understanding, and acceptance. I can’t think of time better spent than identifying and celebrating work that does just this.”

According to Clark, while the Glass Lion category, which honors campaigns pushing gender equality, inclusivity, and diversity, is just three years old, there has been a continuing growth in number of entries, with a 30% increase tallied for this year.

The jury looked for work that was “fresh, brave, transformational, impactful, and lasting,” said Clark. The ‘Fearless Girl’ by McCann and SSGA was chosen to win the Grand Prix because it gripped the attention of people worldwide.
