Secret 7″ melds music and art for mind in 2018

Words by Melvin Galapon

After taking a year off, this month saw the return of this year’s Secret 7s exhibition at The Jetty in Greenwich Peninsula. The event is the brainchild of Kevin King who came up with the concept back in 2012. Each charity event revolves around the concept of inviting artists, designers, and creators to design their very own version of a 7-inch single cover based on a specific list of tracks for that year.

This year tracks included:

Jimi Hendrix – Castles Made of Sand

London Grammar – Help

Eurythmics – I Saved The World Today

Primal Scream – Damaged

Manic Street Preachers – No Surface All Feeling

The Clash – I’m Not Down

Jeff Buckley – Lover, You Should’ve Come Over

As with each year the event helps raise money for a different charity, this years charity is mental health Charity Mind (https://www.mind.org.uk/get-involved/donate-or-fundraise/donate/?secret7) and with the loss of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain recently a rather apt one.

I was fortunate enough to be invited to take part again this year and with the roster of artists getting bigger and better year on year, with this year’s roster including the likes of Sir Paul Smith, Jake & Dinos Chapman and Sir Anish Kapoor it’s an event growing in popularity. On Sunday 24th June at 10 am all the artworks will go on sale and as with past shows, the identity of each artist is kept hidden from the buyer until they’ve bought it.

The exhibition opened on June 8th and ran until June 23rd, 11 am – 19.30pm.

All info on the show can be found here: www.secret-7.com.
