O&M and Japan lead in Asian shortlisted entries for D&AD

Seven Asian countries were able to get in 58 entries into the D&AD Awards 2010 Shortlist, where out of 560 entries 135 have been nominated for a D&AD Pencil.

With 5 nominations and 20 In-Book, Japan leads the Asian countries in terms of the number of agencies and entries shortlisted. China follows with 11 entries from 10 agencies shortlisted and winning one nomination. Singapore’s entries include one nomination and 7 In Book. India has 4 entries shortlisted and the Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia with one apiece.

Ogilvy & Mather’s offices in Singapore, China and India leads the Asian agency networks with a share of 14% with 7 entries out of 51. Dentsu Inc. Tokyo gets the 2nd biggest share with 12% (6 entries). SenseTeam owns 10% with 5 entries followed by Projector Inc. Japan with 6% (3 entries).

Asia’s shortlisted entries are spread out across categories. Japan, China, Singapore, Taiwan and Malaysia reigns] as single entrants in most categories including Art Direction, Branding, Digital Advertising, Illustration, Book Design, Website, Typography and “Design” categories.
According to Campaign Brief Asia, total submissions from some countries dropped off from 2009 with Singapore leading the drop with 33% on the 2010 entry levels, Malaysia at 45%, China at 46% and Hong Kong by 22%. Meanwhile countries like Japan and India have increased by 1%. Taiwan, on the other hand, had a 37% increase.

With D&AD reputation of being the most difficult competitions to win, we have yet to see how the Asians will do on the awards night. The winners will be announced online and at the D&AD Awards Ceremony & Dinner on June 3 2010. Awards nomination will be announced the week before May 11.
