Running for ‘A Liter of Light’

THE PHILIPPINES, SEPTEMBER 19, 2012 – Bloggers, press and running enthusiasts convened at R.O.X., Southeast Asia’s biggest outdoor superstore, last night, September 18, for the press launch of adobo’s much-awaited ‘Run After Dark 3: Party with a Run’.

In its third run, adobo is partnering with Event King, organizers of the NatGeo Run and the Condura Skyway Marathon among many others, for a bigger and more exciting event at the Mall of Asia Complex on October 20 (Saturday).

Janelle Barretto-Squires, adobo‘s chief operating officer and vice president, opened the evening with a recount of Run After Dark’s success last year and a foretelling of just as much, or maybe even more, fun. So why hold a marathon at night? Barretto-Squires explains, “Because it’s a challenge. When there’s a challenge, there’s an opportunity. And this is an opportunity to be unique.”

MyShelter Foundation founder Illac Diaz graced the press launch to talk about the group’s latest venture – and adobo Run After Dark’s beneficiary since last year – ‘Liter of Light’. Diaz reports that since its launch, ‘Liter of Light’ has caught the attention of the United Nations and was able to bring this sustainable innovation to 30 countries (200,000 solar bulbs).

Diaz was excited to demonstrate their newest project: a waterproof, collapsible lighting system in the form of a compact inflatable bag. Light is stored in batteries that power 8-LED lights, allowing the light to be used in the evening for up to four hours. He encouraged everyone to do more than spread awareness but to actually find a solution, something he says “Filipinos can do, will do […] and will show the world how to do it”.

With the help of event host Jag Garcia, adobo‘s business and development officer Mia Navarro facilitated the games, sponsored by McDonald’s, Asia Brewery and Smart Communications. Chicken Charlie, Krispy Kreme and Adobo Central also provided food and refreshments.

Completing the roster of sponsors and partners are Greenlite Banner, Timex, Meralco, St Luke’s Medical Center and Videosonic. Media partners include Business Mirror, Manila Bulletin, Philippine Star, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Inquirer.net, The Bullrunner, Multisport Magazine, Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Runnersworld, WheninManila, Mellow 94.7 and 99.5RT.

Shampoo Padilla and Geronimo Photographico came to capture the fun in photos.

Run After Dark is literally a party with a run. The race is divided into three categories: 5k, 10k and 15k, and will be followed by a spectacular after-party with live music, fireworks and flowing beer. To make it more interesting, Event King president Princess Galura shared that adobo recipes by celebrities (Judy Ann Santos, Rovilson Fernandez etc) are included in the bib.
