MyShelter Foundation’s A Liter of Light a finalist in global green energy awards

THE PHILIPPINES, APRIL 25, 2012: A contender for the Ashden Awards 2012, MyShelter Foundation’s a Liter of Light initiative will be competing along with other finalists from Africa, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Indonesia and Peru in the prestigious awards in London on May 30, 2012.

Serving as a yardstick for excellence in the field of energy, the award-giving body recognizes projects championing sustainable energy that affect change in their respective communities with the winner bagging £120,000 prize money.

Non-government organization MyShelter Philippines’ sustainable lighting project A Liter of Light aimed at lighting poor communities nationwide introduces solar bottle bulbs made up of clear plastic drink bottles with water and a few drops of bleach inside sealed into roofs enabling sunshine to pass through. With the help of social media this project has garnered volunteer support locally and internationally and has successfully installed 25,000 bottle-lights so far and aspires to light 1million homes by 2012.
Since its founding year, the Ashden Awards has been addressing climate change through the use of local sustainable energy and has alleviated poverty with winners improving the lives of 33 million people worldwide and has been successfully saving over 4 million tones of CO2 every year.

Founder Director, Sarah Butler-Sloss had this to say to encourage other green projects: “In this International Year for Sustainable Energy for all our finalists are leading the way in showing how progress on cutting carbon can go hand-in-hand with improving livelihoods, empowering women and improving health and education outcomes.”
