Ogilvy & Mather China lights up the sky with Chinese New Year fireworks iPhone app

ASIA-PACIFIC – BEIJING, CHINA, JANUARY 25, 2011 – Ogilvy & Mather China today launched a free iPhone app to usher in the Year of the Rabbit on Chinese New Year, February 3.

The new app allows users to add virtual firework visuals and sounds to any view using the iPhone’s camera function. Personalized text greetings in Chinese or English can then be placed on the photo and emailed, saved, shared to social networks, or uploaded to Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter.

Said O&M Greater China CEO, Shenan Chuang, “We created this app to combine two of the most popular activities of this festive season in China –  the traditional custom of setting off fireworks that dates back hundreds of years and the newest tradition of sending Chinese New Year greetings by text message.”

“We read the 18 billion Chinese New Year greeting text messages were sent out last year. So we though this year we’d try to give people something far more innovative, engaging and fun to send to their friends and family for the holiday,” said Doug Schiff, ECD of OgilvyOne Beijing, who worked with Ogilvy Digital Lab Director Sascha Engel to develop the app.
