Ogilvy & Mather Shanghai’s ‘Coke Hands’ bags two Grand Prix awards

ASIA-PACIFIC – CHINA, SEPTEMBER 19, 2012 – Fresh from its Grand Prix win at Cannes, Ogilvy & Mather Shanghai’s ‘Coke Hands’ won two more Grand Prix awards at the recently concluded Spikes Asia 2012.

The poster was awarded the Outdoor Grand Prix at Cannes and it repeated the same feat at Spikes while scooping Gold in the same category. But it did not stop there as the poster also scored the Print & Poster Grand Prix.

The creator of the ‘Coke Hands’ poster is 20-year-old Jonathan Mak, the same young man behind the iconic Steve Jobs tribute that has stirred the whole world last year.

Commenting on his design aesthetic, Mak said, “I do enjoy injecting a sense of wit and humor into my designs when appropriate, but you can’t exactly build a career upon puns. The design should serve the idea to be communicated, and it takes more than witty minimalist designs to helpop the world get its message across.”

Mak didn’t expect to see his work awarded at Cannes. Graham Fink, Ogilvy & Mather China’s chief creative officer, did. “I was very confident that it would win something as I believe it’s an iconic piece of work. But to win the Grand Prix (Cannes) was just amazing.”

The ‘Coke Hands’ campaign was seen on bus shelters in China since April 2012 and has already run in Mumbai. It will also run in London, New York, Paris and Milan.
