Google Goggles and Apple iAds: advertising on a smaller screen

GLOBAL, NOVEMBER 2010 – Are you ready for the next frontier of advertising? Google and Apple have launched their own platforms to connect advertisers with consumers on their smartphones. With Google Goggles and Apple iAds, advertisers have the opportunity to invite potential consumers to fully immerse themselves with their products on the small screen.

iPhone users would have already noticed iAds while using their apps, or might be participating with iAds without realizing it. Notable ads include Campbell Soup Company showcasing their nutritional value and recipes made with Campbell’s, while JC Penny allows users to pick and mix pictures of clothes from their latest collection.

Google Goggles gives consumers the choice on which products to learn about. With the Goggle application, phone users can take a snapshot of any product, and the Goggle application will suggest online sites relevant to the image they just took. Brands Diageo, Disney, Buick, T-Mobile, and Delta are the initial guinei pigs for the application’s beta.

Google and Apple are optimistic about this new approach. "We believe that people can love advertising again." Apple declares on the iAd site. Says Shailesh Nalawadi, Google Project Manager, "Users are conducting visual searches to explore the world around them. We’re looking forward to learning how we can deliver the most meaningful and relevant visual search results."
