Campaign Spotlight: Propuesta Civica and Publicis Mexico on #StillSpeakingUp

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO – Javier Valdez, journalist and writer murdered in Culiacán, Sinaloa, “returns from the death” to demand justice to Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Mexico’s Governors, within the framework of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists – November 2nd.

I’m not afraid because they can’t kill me twice, says Javier Valdez in the video of the second edition of the campaign #StillSpeakingUp, led by the organization Propuesta Cívica, which since 2011 accompanies dozens of family members, journalists and human rights activists who have been threatened, assaulted, disappeared, displaced and murdered for carrying out their work.

In 2019 the campaign #StillSpeakingUp, reactivated the Twitter accounts of four journalists murdered in Mexico, who for a week wrote again about those topics that allegedly caused their murder. The campaign was a trending topic in Mexico, and obtained awards and mentions at the international level in the main communication festivals such as the Cannes Festival, Epica Awards, The One Club, among others.

In February 2020, due to the context of violence that continues against the press, with more than 15 journalists murdered since AMLO assumed the presidency of Mexico, Propuesta Cívica decided to launch a decalogue with urgent measures that should be put in place for the protection and search for justice for the families of murdered and disappeared journalists in the country.

Unlike the countless demands that the president and governors receive, Propuesta Cívica used an innovative technology never used before in Mexico, a software that allowed to physically recreate and match the voice of the journalist Javier Valdez, who on Thursday October 29th addressed an urgent message to the president and governors of Mexico, demanding that urgent measures needed to be taken to address a problem that their administrations have not dealt with. After that Javier Valdez, had interviews with opinion leaders in news programs of national relevance to present the Decalogue.

Like the first edition of #StillSpeakingUp, the campaign has the approval and supervision of the family members of Javier Valdez, who since 2017 are legally represented by Propuesta Cívica. During the planning of the campaign, his wife, Griselda Triana has provided personal details such as the journalist’s hats and has contributed to the realization of the script, with the objective of recreating her husband with precision.
