PHD Philippines builds houses through Big Hugs

PHILIPPINES, MARCH 2011 – At exactly half-past eight in the morning, the PHD Philippines (PH) team started to awaken their muscles and joints, in preparation for a different kind of heavy work- excavation, re-bar fabrication, back filling, and compaction. The staff devoted this day to help build at least five units of housing in Karisma Village, Malabon; in support of Habitat for Humanity’s “No More Slums” venture.

As the day progressed, the volunteers–including OMG-PH’s CEO & President, Hermie de Leon and PHD-PH’s General Manager, Me-An Bernardo–grouped themselves and went on their assigned tasks; one work station at a time. The site was supervised by Engr. Romin Clamer who reminded the builders of safety measures and the "Zero Accident" principle.

Despite the extreme conditions on-site, the entire team was able to reach their target by mid-day. "I hope that this day will be the start of PHD-PH’s relationship with the community,” said Ricky Jacinto, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity, who saw the enthusiasm of the volunteer-builders.
This build-day event was the culmination of PHD-PH’s month-long efforts of selling specially-designed T-shirts, in order to generate money enough to provide a decent shelter to homeless Filipino families.

This was PHD Philippines’ take on the Big Hug Project, a worldwide campaign initiated by PHD worldwide, as a humanitarian way of celebrating its 21st anniversary this year, as the world’s fastest growing media agency.

Each of the 70 PHD offices was challenged to interpret and execute the campaign in its respective country. The objective is simple: raise funds, give to a chosen charity.

“The success of this project- from planning to the selling of shirts, to the actual build day- was made possible through the staff’s exceptional creativity and compassionate spirit. During this time wherein teamwork and solidarity are almost impossible in our industry, everyone should be proud that our team set a good example for others to emulate.” said Me-An Bernardo; while Hermie de Leon, on the other hand, promised to return in time for the inauguration of the pledged houses.
