Agnes Locsin traces the evolution of neo-ethnic choreography in special Ayala Museum lecture

Ayala Museum’s revitalized heritage education series, Pamana ng Pilipino, will feature a special lecture by National Artist for Dance Agnes D. Locsin, one of the most influential figures in Philippine dance and the pioneer of Neo-Ethnic Dance.

Recognized for her groundbreaking contributions to choreography, teaching, and mentorship, Locsin has played a defining role in shaping the Philippine dance landscape. A former Artistic Director of Ballet Philippines, she developed Neo-Ethnic Dance in the 1990s, drawing inspiration from Philippine tribal dances, beliefs, and traditions. Her distinctive movement vocabulary merges indigenous Filipino movement with classical ballet and modern dance techniques.

Among her most celebrated works are ENCANTADA, MORIONES, BAGOBO, BABAYLAN, SALOME, and LA REVOLUCION FILIPINA, productions that have become landmarks in Philippine dance.

A native of Davao City, Locsin earned her Master’s Degree in Dance from Ohio State University and later immersed herself in the dance scenes of Europe before developing her signature artistic style. She currently serves as Artistic Director of the Locsin Dance Workshop, the oldest existing dance school in the Philippines, founded by her mother, Carmen D. Locsin.

In 2022, Locsin received the country’s highest distinction for artists when she was named National Artist for Dance.

Titled “Pamana ng Pilipino: A Lecture by National Artist for Dance Agnes D. Locsin,” the event will feature the National Artist as she traces “The Path to Neo-Ethnic Choreography” — from her early exposure to Filipino dance traditions and formal training to the artistic process behind her distinct movement language.

During the lecture, Locsin will share stories behind key works including Igorot, Bagobo, and Moslem, as well as discuss her latest exploration into Neo-Ethnic Tap Dance. The program will also feature the Locsin Dance Workshop.

Pamana ng Pilipino is rooted in the collections of Ayala Museum and the Filipinas Heritage Library (FHL). The series highlights how cultural inheritance continues to shape Filipino identity while offering new ways of understanding the country’s evolving heritage.

The event is made possible with the support of Purefoods Deli and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts through the Order of the National Artist program.

The lecture will take place on Thursday, June 11, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Ayala Museum in Makati City.
