Globe points to RFID systems as major cause of Makati signal interference

MANILA, September 24, 2013 – After months of monitoring by the telecom company’s technical team, Globe has pointed to high-intensity radio frequency identification systems (RFID) as the major cause of the cellular signal interference that affects the area of Guadalupe to Magallanes.

According to Globe, the RFID systems have been installed in residential subdivisions as a means of monitoring vehicles entering and leaving village premises. RFID is a wireless non-contact use of radio-frequency electromagnetic fields to transfer data, for the purposes of automatically identifying and tracking tags attached to objects. The tags contain electronically stored information.

An interference scanning test conducted by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) confirmed that the RFID system used by residential subdivisions operate on frequencies outside of the NTC-allowed specifications for frequency bands, thus becoming a source of network interference for Globe subscribers in the area.

“It is unfortunate that a RFID system aimed at providing security in certain villages has been the cause of a major source of signal interference in the area. We would like to assure our subscribers that the company is doing everything within its reach to resolve the issue,” said Atty. Froilan Castelo, Globe head of Corporate Legal Services Division.

According to Castelo, Globe is now working on resolving the issue with the NTC and homeowners’ association representatives from exclusive residential subdivisions including Forbes Park, Dasmarinas Village, Urdaneta Village and Bel-Air.

Castelo also said that scanning tests will be conducted in other exclusive villages to determine if their RFID systems also cause network interference resulting dropped calls, garbled lines, and weak signal. He added Globe will continue to intensify its campaign against network interference so that subscribers are able to maximize the benefits of the company’s network modernization initiative.
