Clark International Airport’s new terminal scores green certification

CLARK, PHILIPPINES – Clark International Airport‘s New Passenger Terminal Building has clinched the coveted EDGE certification—standing tall as a beacon of sustainable design in the country’s aviation landscape.

The Philippine Green Building Initiative, Inc. (PGBI) bestowed this prestigious recognition following a rigorous evaluation against global standards established by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), an arm of the World Bank Group.

EDGE certification – an acronym for Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies represents a global benchmark for sustainability, currently embraced across more than 170 countries. More than just an environmental badge, it validates that cutting-edge sustainable design makes financial sense in today’s market.

The terminal’s impressive green credentials speak volumes: 21% energy savings, 26% water conservation, and a remarkable 54% reduction in embodied energy compared to conventional construction practices.

“This certification proves that we can offer world-class comfort and efficiency without compromising our commitment to the environment,” said Noel Manankil, President and CEO of the Luzon International Premiere Airport Development Corporation (LIPAD), operator of Clark International Airport.

The architectural marvel integrates multiple sustainability innovations: high-performance glass that optimizes natural light while minimizing heat gain, an insulated roof system, demand-responsive ventilation, and smart metering for precision energy management. Water conservation comes courtesy of low-flow fixtures throughout the facility, while construction materials were carefully selected for minimal environmental impact—featuring in-situ reinforced concrete, aluminum-clad sandwich panels, precast concrete walls, and medium-weight hollow blocks.

This achievement further strengthens CRK’s position as a premier gateway and underscores its pivotal role in the nation’s sustainable development agenda – proving that in the Philippines, the journey toward environmental responsibility is already taking flight.
