Globe and Proudcloud team up for Startup Weekend Manila

THE PHILIPPINES, OCTOBER 2011: Business and innovation come together as Globe Telecom in partnership with web engineering firm Proudcloud bring Startup Weekend, one of the most successful start-up accelerator programs from the United States, to Philippine shores.

Startup Weekend Manila is a 54-hour event which aims to convene developers, designers, marketers, technopreneurs, and venture capitalists that want to share ideas or receive feedback for a product concept, kick-start a business or are looking for business partners or co-founders, or want to learn new skills or incorporate new technologies into their business ideas.

“Globe is once again pioneering innovation by bringing the Startup Weekend to the Philippines. This global innovation exercise seeks to showcase the best ideas, talents, and resources for future businesses,” said Globe’s New Business Group Head Minette Navarrete.

Proudcloud is a web engineering firm that specializes in web architecture and development, user experience design, mobile applications, and web strategies. Jay Fajardo, CEO of Proudcloud, said that Startup Weekend is “the perfect venue for local tech entrepreneurs to come up from the grass roots and turn their ideas into viable businesses.”

Over 100 delegates are expected to participate in Startup Weekend Manila, to be held on October 21–23 at the Mint College in McKinley Hill ,  Taguig City. Participants will have the chance to network, propose business concepts, and team up to develop the most popular, viable ideas. With help from industry experts, who will serve as mentors for Startup Weekend, the teams will build their business models and present them through a short pitch and demonstration.

The 15 best teams will be shortlisted for the 100-day boot camp in Singapore in January 2012, where counterparts from Australia, India, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand will also be participating. Each team of developers and entrepreneurs will receive $15,000 to help finance their businesses and will also get the chance to pitch to international investors.

Startup Weekend Manila is supported by Dynamic Objx, McDonald’s, Microsoft, and San Miguel Corporation. The Globe-Proudcloud team was commissioned by Joyful Frog Digital Incubator and SingTel Innov8, the corporate venture arm of the SingTel Group, to stage Startup Weekend in the country.
