Manila Bulletin dons yellow for Cory anniversary

PHILIPPINES – In an surprising show of color, the Philippines’ oldest newspaper turned its front page yellow for the death anniversary of former President Corazon Aquino on August 1, 2010. The headline read "Cory’s inspiration lives on" and the front page stories were tributes to the country’s first female president.

Last year, the Philippine Daily Inquirer wore yellow to mourn the former president’s death, a major move for the leading broadsheet as yellow is the color of its closest competitor, the Philippine Star. Of the top three dailies, the Manila Bulletin alone remained true to its house colors.

The Manila Bulletin has been seen sympathetic to the administration, treading carefully on issues against the government. With the election of President Benigno Aquino III, the Manila Bulletin can show its new color without fear. But one wonders whether the change is a year too late.
