Jukebox musicals often arrive with an unspoken assumption that the audience already knows the artist, the songs, and the cultural moment that made them iconic. Their success frequently depends on nostalgia, inviting theatergoers to relive memories through familiar hits.

On Your Feet! The Story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan turns that assumption on its head.

You don’t need nostalgia to enjoy On Your Feet!—its music, energy, and heart make the golden age of Latin pop feel alive for every generation.

The Manila staging at the Proscenium Theater demonstrates that you don’t need to be a Gloria Estefan fan or even have lived through the height of her career to appreciate the musical. While longtime listeners will undoubtedly recognize classics like “Conga,” “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” and “Get On Your Feet,” the production is compelling enough to welcome those encountering the Estefans’ music for the very first time.

Rather than presenting a concert disguised as a musical, On Your Feet! succeeds because its songs are rooted in a story that feels deeply human. The production chronicles Gloria and Emilio’s rise from Miami’s Cuban immigrant community to international superstardom, weaving together themes of family, cultural identity, ambition, sacrifice, and resilience. These are stories that transcend generations, making the musical resonate well beyond the era that produced its soundtrack.

Perhaps that is the greatest compliment that the musical deserves. It doesn’t ask the audience to revisit a memory; instead, it creates one.

To a younger audience, particularly Gen Z, the musical offers an experience free from the weight of nostalgia. Viewers unfamiliar with Gloria’s biggest hits or the era that defined her career need not rely on fond memories to appreciate the production. Instead, through its driving percussion, vibrant brass, dazzling choreography, and the warmth of the Estefans’ story, the theater transforms into a time machine powered by rhythm. For two and a half hours, the audience does not merely watch the golden age of Latin pop unfold — they are immersed in it, experiencing its energy and spirit as if they were living it themselves.

Compelling performances

Led by Kayla Rivera (Gloria Estefan) and Jason Canela (Emilio Estefan), the principal cast delivers compelling performances throughout the production.

Kayla captures Gloria not through imitation but through emotional authenticity, portraying the singer’s quiet determination, vulnerability, and unwavering passion with remarkable sincerity. Her convincing performance and her voice leave a lasting impression. She balances vocal power with emotional nuance, allowing each song to become an extension of the story rather than merely a showcase of technical ability, especially when she delivers heartfelt ballads or high-energy Latin anthems.

From soaring brass to infectious Latin rhythms, On Your Feet! turns every musical number into a vibrant celebration of the sounds that reshaped global pop culture.

Opposite her, Jason delivers an equally outstanding performance. He embodies the visionary producer with charisma and confidence while revealing the tenderness beneath his ambition. Jason’s portrayal captures Emilio as both a relentless dreamer and a devoted husband, grounding the musical’s emotional core in a believable partnership. The chemistry between the two gives the production its heartbeat, making the Estefans’ journey feel intimate even amid the grandeur of the musical numbers.

Meanwhile, the supporting cast proves just as memorable. Ayen Laurel brings warmth, grace, and emotional depth to her role, delivering moments of quiet strength that resonate long after each scene ends. Pinky Marquez, meanwhile, commands the stage with her unmistakable presence, balancing humor and heartfelt sincerity with effortless ease. The two enrich the musical’s family dynamic, reminding audiences that the musical is not only about fame and music but also about the people whose love and sacrifices made those triumphs possible.

Vibrant choreography

The show’s rich music matches its emotional accessibility. The score celebrates the vitality of Latin pop through syncopated rhythms, soaring brass lines, driving percussion, and unmistakable Afro-Cuban influences. Every musical number pulses with infectious energy, drawing from salsa, son Cubano, and contemporary Latin dance music that transformed global pop culture.

Furthermore, the choreography embraces that same exuberance. Every movement feels intentional, with crisp ensemble formations, fluid partner work, and dynamic transitions that sustain the show’s momentum from one scene to the next.

The Latin dance vocabulary is similarly executed with remarkable sharpness, capturing both the elegance and explosive energy that define the genre. Whether during intimate ballroom-inspired moments or full-company production numbers, the choreography radiates joy and precision, earning enthusiastic applause throughout the performance.

The production’s vibrant costumes further enrich the visual spectacle. Bursting with bold colors, shimmering fabrics, and silhouettes inspired by Latin performance traditions, each costume change enhances the celebratory atmosphere while reflecting the evolution of Gloria’s career. Together with the choreography, the wardrobe creates a visual language that feels festive, expressive, and unmistakably Latin, while emanating the vibe of Miami, Florida, where Miami Sound Machine, Gloria and Emilio’s band, was based.

An introduction and invitation

What ultimately distinguishes On Your Feet! is its refusal to rely solely on nostalgia. Instead, it invites the audience into the cultural heartbeat of Latin music — one that is rooted in community, celebration, perseverance, and identity. The production reminds viewers that Gloria’s legacy extends beyond platinum records and Grammy Awards; it lies in helping Latin music cross borders while remaining proudly connected to its heritage.

To younger theatergoers discovering her music for the first time, the musical serves as both an introduction and an invitation. To longtime fans, it offers a joyful tribute to an artist whose influence continues to shape contemporary music.

By the final curtain, it becomes obvious that On Your Feet! isn’t reserved for those who grew up with Gloria on the radio. Its greatest strength lies in proving that a well-told story, vibrant performances, exhilarating choreography, and the irresistible pulse of Latin music are more than enough to get the audience on its feet—clapping, swaying, and smiling alongside everyone else.

The Story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan” will run on all weekends, from July 10 until July 26, 2026, at 8:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 3:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, at the Proscenium Theater, Rockwell Center in Makati City.  Tickets are now available at TicketWorld outlets and online and at the Power Plant Mall Cinema.
