Lucille Tenazas receives AIGA Medal for design

MANILA, FEBRUARY 8, 2013 – Filipino design educator and practitioner Lucille Tenazas has been bestowed the AIGA Medal for her "prominent role in translating postmodern ideas into critical design practice; her exploration of the relationship between type, photography and language; and the development and leadership of highly-respected design education programs ".

 
The AIGA Medal recognizes individuals who have contributed exceptionally to the field of design and visual communication. The recognition is given by AIGA, a US-based nonprofit organization dedicated to design.
 
Tenazas joins John Bielenberg, William Drenttel and Jessica Helfand, Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones, Stefan Sagmeister, and Wolfgang Weingart in receiving the prestigious award.
 
She is the founder and principal of Tenazas Design, which was based in San Francisco for 20 years before relocating to New York in 2006. Some of her clients include Chronicle Books, Princeton Architectural Press, Rizzoli International and the Neue Galerie Museum for German and Austrian Art in New York. 
 
Her career began with designing marketing and promotional materials for pharmaceutical companies. Tenazas came to the United States for postgraduate studies through an aunt who wanted to return a favor to her late father. Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including a permanent place at the San Francisco of Modern Art, and in surveys at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and the Cranbrook Academy of Art. In 2002, she was bestowed the Cooper-Hewitt’s National Design Award for Communication Design.
 
Tenazas has served as the national president of AIGA from 1996 to 1997, and has had a place on the boards of the San Francisco and New York chapters. Currently she is The Henry Wolf Professor at the School of Art, Media and Technology at Parsons The New School for Design in New York.
