Documentary film ‘Girl Rising’ comes to Manila

MANILA – October 7, 2013 – An orphan from Cambodia rises from the dumps and becomes a star dancer; a girl forced into slavery in Nepal uses her newfound freedom to free others like her;  a young survivor of the Haiti earthquake demands to return to school in the aftermath of the disaster.

These are only some of the nine extraordinary stories included in Girl Rising, a documentary film directed by Academy Award nominee Richard Robbins,  produced by The Documentary Group and Vulcan Productions with Intel Corporation and CNN Films.

Far from being the typical sob story, the film is anchored by a powerful script written by a pool of renowned writers from all over the world. As the centerpiece of the 10×10 campaign to educate and empower girls, the film is more than just a chronicle of extraordinary lives–it is a call to action.

In celebration of the International Day of the Girl on October 11, Intel, Plan International, and the Asian Development Bank will be hosting local screenings in various community areas nationwide.

Meanwhile, Intel Philippines country manager Calum Chisholm said, "Here in the Philippines, Intel is hard at work to promote the vital message of Girl Rising by partnering with various organizations that help spread the word to the grassroots girl child, their parents, and their neighbors."
