Can you share how you started your creative journey?

My creative journey started right after my first work; I was a bit lost and undecided about my career path. I was aiming to go abroad and seek opportunities there and at the same time, I was doing a lot of fan art — which is something I’m always fond of since I was a kid.  This made me decide to pursue freelancing to be able to focus more on illustrations. Commissions then started to pile in as I began posting my work on social media and before I know it, I was doing editorial work for local and international magazines such as GQ, Esquire, and Advance Photoshop.  That same exposure led to more work as I transition into film art and thus landed me gigs from movie studios.

Give three words to describe your signature style.

That would be Pop, Sharp, and Vibrant

Who/what do you take inspiration from?

I take a lot of inspiration from artists who do video games and films. One of which is Drew Struzan; whose style taught me the value of character rendition and composition. Also, his approach in doing poster art gave me insight into why it is essential to capture the audience’s imagination. It’s through his body of work that I found the deep satisfaction of telling a story through a single sheet of art — that is movie posters.

What has been your most memorable project to date?

It would be The Avengers: Age of Ultron gallery show in Hero Complex gallery in LA. Aside from it being my first official Marvel gig, it made an impact because it was given at an urgent notice that I had to meet the deadline and do the art in just a week.

This set up required me to check up on the gallery owners and agents on a daily basis; making sure every likeness rights and revisions are on point and I only had a small window of error or else the project is off the table. You could say that it’s the rush of pulling the project off that made it memorable.

What lessons can we anticipate in your session for this coming Graphika Manila 2020?

Definitely my journey on how I ended up doing movie poster gigs but more importantly the transitions, lessons, and finding your footing in the ever-changing art scene.
