Hit or miss: puppies, daddies and sexy bodies star in Super Bowl XLIX

GLOBAL – American football fans, marketers and advertisers once again united for one of the biggest sporting and television events in the world—the Super Bowl XLIX.

Brands vied to capture the attention of millions of viewers who were glued to their screens on Sunday with uniquely crafted ads that were reportedly worth a walloping $4.5 million for a 30-seconder spot.

Five days before the big game, the internet was already abuzz with the ads.

Super Bowl hall of famer Budweiser extended the cute and heartwarming story of  last year’s “Puppy Love,” Facebook’s most shared ad of all time. The brand’s signature Clydesdale will once again star with a puppy in “Lost Dog,” a touching sequel to the ad about friendship.

Website host GoDaddy, on the other hand, despite a cute puppy, failed in its attempt to touch hearts but instead got the flak for showing a dog being shipped out and supposedly promoting puppy mills in its ad “Journey Home.” Due to the outrage, the company has decided to pull the ad.

This year’s rookies also had the internet talking. Other than being a rather unusual player, Mophie, a battery phone case manufacturer, stood out after being the first brand to secure a spot with NBC while Skittles tickled the viewers’ interest with its teaser: It will be settled.

Returnee Nissan, along with Toyota chose dads as this year’s stars.

Of course, Super Bowl 2015 did not hold back on the sexiness. Victoria’s Secret made a comeback for the first time since 2008 first with an online video featuring Candice Swanepoel, Lily Aldridge, Adriana Lima, Doutzen Kroes and Behati Prinsloo dressed as football players, and then a 30-seconder ad just in time for Valentine’s day.

Meanwhile, T-mobile keeps its promise to feature an overpaid movie star this time around. Kim Kardashian stars in a satirical and funny ad about no less than herself, and asks you to save your data so you could use it to see her #selfies.

Other players this year were Wix.com, McDonalds, Snickers, Doritos, Mercedes Benz, Carnival, Toyota, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, American Family Insurance, Bud Light, Nationwide, Loctite, Turbo Tax, BMW, Avocados from Mexico, KIA, Weather Tech, Lexus, Eat 24, Carl’s Jr., Weight Watchers, Microsoft, Esurance.

The Clio Awards, the award giving body for creative advertising, also announced the Clio Creative Bowl which will award the top Super Bowl ads starting this year.
