MMDA on a roll with billboard tarp removal

PHILIPPINES – JULY 12, 2011 – Following the announcement of the creation of a committee for screening ads, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has continued its billboard rolldown on EDSA on July 11. The billboards included the Century Tuna billboard featuring Phil Younghusband and Angel Locsin, as well as the Kojie-san ad showing the model’s uncovered legs and back.

In a report by Inquirer’s Tina Santos, MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said that the billboards were removed primarily because they lacked the necessary permits. Various DPWH, MMDA and LGU permits are required for billboards.

Tolentino also noted that the government is tasked to regulate billboards, according to a Supreme Court decision. He declared that the authority will discuss with the advertising industry as well as other stakeholders to come up with guidelines for outdoor ads.

Last week, MMDA continued its "Operation Roll Down, Baby", which started in May, bringing the total cases filed against illegal billboard operators to 18.
