MANILA – After breaking Twitter, the viral on-screen love team of actor Alden Richards and Maine “Yaya Dub” Mendoza have also conquered the world’s biggest online search engine too.
In as little as five months, the popularity of Aldub, brought them to the top of Google’s annual list of top trending search terms in the Philippines for 2015. On the lovers’ tail is Pope Francis, who visited the Philippines last January.
Mendoza also secured the third spot on the overall poll, consequently ranking at the top of the trending female personalities for the year. Her partner was also on the top trending male personalities just next to Pope France at the first place.
Dubsmash, the app that catapulted Aldub into stardom was at the fifth place.
Rounding up the top 10 search terms for the year are FIBA Asia 2015, the movie adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey,”the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit, Paris attacks, and the Commission on Elections.
Gail Tan, Google Philippines’ head of communication and public affairs, said the annual list shows Filipinos’ “increasing involvement and interest” in current events and awareness of general knowledge.
“Year in Search is Google’s way of looking back at the meaningful moments that captured the people’s interest through the year.”
“Locally, the trending search items of 2015 are a good reflection of the Filipinos’ increasing involvement and interest in the things that are happening around them, whether in historic national events or the breakout of a new pop culture icon,” she added.
Globally, the top 10 overall trending searches worldwide are Lamar Odom, Jurassic World, American Sniper, Caitlyn Jenner, Ronda Rousey, Paris, Agar.io, Chris Kyle, Fallout4, and Straight Outta Compton.
