Arts & Culture: KOMIKET Launches the 1st Philippine International Comics Festival (PICOF)

MANILA, PHILIPPINES —With so many local komiks worthy to be read by the world,
KOMIKET, one of the biggest and most anticipated local komiks and affordable art markets in the country will be launching the 1st Philippine International Comics Festival (PICOF) on June 12-14, 2020.

A STATE OF INDEPENDENCE

PICOF offers its purely komiks market starting with ten (10) new comic books competing in the Official Selection, an Independent Section showcasing favorite local independent creators, and an International Section for creators and publishers outside the Philippines.
An international jury will be invited to judge the Komiket Awards, where creators have a
chance of winning trophies and the Best Komiks takes home a cash prize of Php150,000.
The festival proper will have curated sections, book launches, artist talks, specialized seminars, komiks pitches and business matching meetings for film producers, merchandisers and publishers.

ROAD TO THE FESTIVAL

The road to PICOF begins with a call for entries for Filipino writers, illustrators and creators of all ages to pitch their original komiks. Whether the komiks is in concept development, a current work in progress or even a finished work, PICOF is open to all genres, in any art style, black and white or fully colored. However, the final output must be in the English language and at least 72 pages or more.

Chosen semi-finalists will be invited to pitch their komiks in front of a Selection Committee, and twenty creators will receive a free Comic Book Creator’s Workshop. From there, ten (10) comic books will be announced as the Official Selection of the 1st Philippine International Comics Festival.

Interested applicants must email their pitches with a signed entry form to komiketinc@gmail.com on or before July 1, 2019. The full mechanics and entry forms are
available in the Komiket and PICOF Facebook Pages.

“PICOF harmonizes everything we’ve learned from National Writer’s Workshops, and
International Film Festivals,” says PICOF Festival Director and Komiket Co-Founder Paolo
Herras. “Komiket is just happy to share this with the community it serves, and the creators who deserve the support. Now, all they need to do is share their story to the world.”
