First all-Filipino book fest kicks off Saturday

MANILA, SEPTEMBER 6, 2013 – Together with the National Book Development Board, Visprint, Inc. presents "Aklatan: The First All-Filipino Book Festival" happening Saturday, September 7, at the Alphaland Southgate mall in Magallanes.

Highlights of the event include a book fair, book launches, panel discussions and seminars.

Komikeros can grab the first few copies of Trese: Stories from the Diabolical (Vol 1) by Budjette Tan (deputy ECD for MRM Manila by day) and Kajo Baldisimo, unveiling tomorrow at the Balesin function room – along with Siege Malvar’s Wasakang Wasak and Eliza Victoria’s Project 17.

In the afternoon, the creators of Trese will join Paolo Fabregas (The Filipino Heroes League; Harrison Communications ACD), Manix Abrera (Kikomachine Komiks) and a special guest in a comic book panel discussion at the tents. Moderator Isagani Cruz will engage National Artists Virgilio Almario, Bienvenido Lumbera and F.Sionil Jose, in a dialogue themed ‘Noong Hindi Pa Ako Sikat’.

Famed Filipino contemporary writers Ricky Lee, Carlo Vergara and Lourd De Veyra are also participating in Aklatan; as well as women writers Jing Hidalgo, Nikki Alfar, Mayette Bayuga, Eliza Victoria and Beverly Siy.

Hand.Interactive’s Natavudh “Moo” Pungchareonpong will be discussing digital publishing trends; while Flipside Publishing is sponsoring ‘eKlatan’ – a session examining the local and international ebook industry with CEO Anthony de Luna, former production manager Adam David and writer Aileen Santos.

With the help of Aspac Advertising, the National Book Development Board will officially kick off a branding drive for Original Philippine Literature at the festival.

The first annual Aklatan will be held Saturday, September 7, at 6th Floor Alphaland Southgate Mall in EDSA cor Chino Roces Avenue, Makati City. Doors will open at 8AM. Entrance fee is P20, with a 50 percent discount for students.
