D&AD presents “sliced” In Book and Nominated trophies

GLOBAL – MAY 2011 – D&AD announced two new physical representations for its In Book and Nominated awards. Christened ‘the slices’,  the trophies designed by Turner Duckworth will join the Yellow, Black and White Pencils to become a cohesive family of Awards. They will be officially launched at the forthcoming D&AD Awards Night, which takes place on Thursday, June 16 at London’s HAC, Artillery Gardens.

Speaking about the concept, Bruce Duckworth said, “The challenge was to create awards that recognize the In Book and Nomination achievements, that have stature, relate to D&AD but are not another Pencil, which could dilute the importance of such an iconic award.”

He went on to say, “Of course, they also need to inspire an ‘I want one of those’ response when seen by others and be objects truly worthy of being displayed.”

“The slices of pencil are relative in relation to the size and material of the Yellow Pencil award. They are also exactly the same shape and proportion of the D&AD hexagonal logo. Of course they are made of wood, to be quirky like the Pencil itself,” he continued.

Speaking about the introduction of the slices D&AD President Simon Sankarayya said, “It’s an honor to have these new physical representations of two incredibly hard-won, uniquely D&AD, prize levels being launched during my year as President. For many years we have endeavored to communicate more effectively the value of winning at any level in the D&AD Awards and the slices will undoubtably help to build awareness of the great level of creativity that it takes to be recognized by our juries.”

He went on to say about the Awards Night: “I’m excited to be part of the plans for the forthcoming Awards Night. The presence of these new slices for the Nominees to get to know better along with the integration of the Student Awards into the evening’s format all means the return to some very important values. I think the evening will truly be a celebration of the year’s work across the industry and it will be an honor to stand on that stage and share it with everyone as we move into our 50th year.
