Why They Won: D&AD Yellow Pencils Showcase takes the jury outside the room

Be the first to discover this year’s Yellow Pencil-winning work

Winning a D&AD Yellow Pencil is hard enough. Understanding why work wins one is a different conversation entirely — and D&AD Festival 2026 is making that conversation public.

“Yellow Pencils: Why They Won” is an extended showcase at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre in London, where Jury Presidents take audiences inside their decisions — sharing why standout work earned Yellow Pencil recognition and what creative excellence looks like at the highest level. It replaces the traditional awards announcement format with something more substantive: a deep dive into creative judgment, not just a results board.

The Yellow Pencil sits just below the Black in D&AD’s hierarchy — reserved for work that achieves genuine creative excellence in a system that awards nothing out of obligation. In a year where D&AD has expanded into new territory with categories like Cultural Influence, Brand Transformation, and Use of AI & Technology embedded across all disciplines, the bar for what earns that recognition has never been more contested — or more worth examining.

The event is open to all, with tickets priced at PHP 75 + VAT, and further discounts available for students, charities, nonprofits, freelancers, small businesses with under 10 employees, and retired creatives — with free tickets set aside for those recently made redundant.

Partners for the evening include FilmBrazil, Global, HP Industrial Graphics, and Shutterstock Studios.

The Yellow Pencil Showcase is part of D&AD Festival 2026’s single-day program at Southbank Centre, running alongside the President’s Lectures, an AI Accelerator session, and the Creative Impact Accelerator. The Black Pencil Ceremony — where the industry’s ultimate accolade is awarded — has been moved to September, making the Yellow Pencil Showcase the first major public verdict on what this year’s creative output is actually worth.
