Collision Theory’s AJ Dimarucot only Filipino in t-shirt Design of the Year competition

How lucrative is t-shirt design?  Just ask graphic designer AJ Dimarucot.  A former ad man, AJ was an art director with Ogilvy & Mather before he decided to give t-shirt and apparel design his full focus.  Dimarucot’s tees and apparel designs have online following, having won in a number of competitions on Threadless.com, Designbyhumans.com, and Uneetee.com.

On Threadless.com, Dimarucot is the only Filipino finalist for Design of the Year, for his “Electric Sky” design.  In fact, the shirt is out of stock.

“The design is inspired by the Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights.  I wanted to recreate that dynamic atmosphere on the t-shirt, using the shirt as a window, gazing at the sky,” Dimarucot describes his work.

“I’ve always been fascinated by space and astronomy and (seeing) the Northern Lights is something that I would want to experience at least once in my life,” he adds.

Voting ends on Monday, February 15.  Threadless.com will bare results in March.

Dimarucot started his own design company called Collision Theory in the mid-2000s, and his designer tees have sold in retail and online stores, among them Urban Outfitters, Hot Topic and Karmaloop since.   Recently, he and his wife started a baby/kid’s label, googoo&gaga, to expand their design field.
