Bates Philippines gives life to fictional characters through augmented reality

THE PHILIPPINES, FEBRUARY 8, 2012: How would you like to see the characters in your favorite novels in action? 

Book worms can get a taste of augmented reality through the Imagine Fully Booked application. The app, which functions in iOS devices such as iPad, iPod, and iPhone, lets users experience 3D characters from books. Simply download the app via the iTunes store for free. Once installed, point your device to any of the book covers in the poster located at a Fully Booked branch and watch the magic unfold. 

“The Fully Booked Imagine App was created to make patrons and even non-patrons of Fully Booked to see their books in an entirely new light. It aims to show how their books open up a world of imagination to the reader,” says James Bernardo, executive creative director of Bates Philippines, the agency that developed the app.

Originally conceptualized as a window display, Bates pushed the concept further and integrated art and augmented reality technology.

“We decided to integrate AR technology into the window display so that we can demonstrate our point even more effectively. It was very nice to see people already interested and intrigued by the character artworks themselves. But it was even more delightful to witness their surprise and wonder when they see the characters leap out of the book covers in full 3D,” says Bernardo.
