Five photojournalists receive Getty Images grant

GLOBAL, September 12, 2013 – Getty Images has awarded five photojournalists grants of $10,000 each as part of their Grants for Editorial Photography program. The winners of the grant were selected from over 500 applications across 60 countries.

Apart from the cash grant, the photographers will receive collaborative editorial support from Getty Images. The projects selected cover issues from drone strikes to consequences of the war in Iraq.

The winning photojournalists and their projects include Eugene Richards, Samuel James, and Matt Eich all from the USA;  Tomas van Houtryve from France; and Marco Gualazzini from Italy.

Richards’ project, War is Personal Part Two, is a follow up of his earlier publication that chronicles the repercussions of the Iraq War. James’ project, The Water of My Land captures the lives of people along the crude oil-rich Niger Delta who resort to illicit trade to survive.

Eich’s reportage, Sin & Salvation in Baptist Town, explores the legacies of racism in southern USA. Houtryve’s project In Drones We Trust sheds light on the victims of drone strikes in Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia. Gualazzini’s work M23- Kivu: a region under siege documents the events following the siege of Kivu in Congo by the military force of M23.

According to Getty Images co-founder and chief executive officer Jonathan Klein, "The 2013 Getty Images Grants for Editorial Photography recipients exemplify the dedication, determination and integrity that define the photojournalism community."

"I am deeply heartened that our grants program continues to provide emerging and established photojournalists with the encouragement and freedom to bring global attention to some of the most complex issues of our time," he said.

On the judging panel this year were Visa Pour L’Image director Jean-Francois Leroy, Sunday Times magazine director of photography Jon Jones, British Journal of Photography acting deputy editor Olivier Laurent, l’Espresso photo editor Tiziana Faraoni, and Firecracker founder Fiona Rogers.
