Digital calls for newspapers to go multi-screen

GLOBAL, SEPTEMBER 14, 2012 – The deluge of digital platforms for content has been one of the main factors for the decline in print readership.

Following a new story by IBISWorld, the weak economic conditions have affected circulation and readership. IBISWorld states that the global newspaper publishing industry is forecast to generate revenues of US$170.5 billion in 2012, which is down 1.4% from 2011.

Despite the economic woes, WoodWing Software, supplier of innovative workflow solutions for efficient multi-channel publishing, is reporting significantly higher interest in its publishing system, Enterprise.

Some titles that have tapped WoodWing include Milenio Nacional and Project Indigo in Mexico, the business newspaper Gestión in Peru, Nuevo Día inVenezuela, Diario de Comercio and Novojornal in Brazil, and more.

In June this year, the Japanese daily newspaper Mainichi Newspaper has launched TAP-i, its daily edition for iOS and Android tablets and smartphones, using WoodWing Enterprise and WoodWing’s renowned Digital Publishing Tools.

Since July, the Kronen Zeitung, Austria’s leading daily newspaper, has been available in a daily issue for tablets. Based on designs created by the famous newspaper designer Mario Garcia, the tablet editions are produced through a highly efficient workflow, again leveraging WoodWing’s Digital Publishing Tools. Also in July, The Herald Sun, Australia´s favorite daily newspaper – read by 1.3 million Victorians every weekday – selected WoodWing to create the daily editions of its hybrid iPad app.

“The newspaper market is under pressure and publishers face many challenges,” said Hans Janssen, CEO of WoodWing Software. “It’s time they seriously look for a modern and future-proof publishing system. An editorial system that supports a medium-neutral approach and has the flexibility to add new media channels is a must. I think that – in addition to cost savings and workflow efficiency – these are the reasons why newspaper publishers worldwide are selecting our publishing system, Enterprise.”

In Switzerland, the Neue Luzerner Zeitung, the leading journalistic voice of Central Switzerland, completed its migration to WoodWing Enterprise in the second quarter this year. The paper is published in one main and five regional editions produced by remote teams, both in print and digital.

Another noteworthy moment related to the newspaper market was the fifth anniversary of the Russian global newspaper supplement Russia Beyond the Headlines. Created with WoodWing and published in 19 different editions, 16 countries and 11 languages with a circulation of 6.8 million copies, Russia Beyond the Headlines (www.rbth.ru) is one of the world’s biggest multilingual publishing projects.

Enterprise, including the editorial management application Content Station, helps address challenges newspaper publishers are facing, such as reducing costs, granular regionalization, trends as hyperlocal news and tapping revenue streams in digital publishing.
