Comics: The many comic book looks of Hawkeye

The Avenging Archer is finally gracing our screens in his first solo adventure (c/o Disney+’s Hawkeye). It’s been 10 years since his live-action debut in the first Thor movie but Clint Barton made his comic book appearance back in 1964. Since that time the character has gone through a lot of costume changes. Let’s have a look!

The Davey Crockett – When Clint first appeared in Tales of Suspense, he sported an outdoor frontiersman look from the 1800s, working in a carnival and touted as the “World’s Greatest Marksman.”

Original Superhero Costume – Hawkeye decided to get into the superhero business and came up with his own duds. This purple mask ensemble would be his defining look (with cosmetic changes here and there) that he would keep returning to until the 2000s.

Headband and skirt – For about a year (!), Clint thought that this no-pants costume was in style. Hey Marvel, any chance Clint will sport this look in the show? Silence means yes!

Check Out Mah Abs – Feeling inadequate due to his lack of powers, there was a time Hawkeye became the super-powered hero, Goliath. He became Hawkeye once more while retaining the Goliath costume elements – an outfit composed of a fitted collar, pants, and not much else.

Battle Armor – After sustaining some injuries, Clint armored up for extra protection. While practical, it was not fashionable, and the armor disappeared rather quickly.

Modernize Hawkeye Attempt #1 – A mask without a cowl. Pouches. Steroids. This was the standard 90s superhero look. Fail.

Modernize Hawkeye Attempt #2 – “Let’s have him look like Wolverine! Just hide his mouth!” Fail.

Ultimates Uniform #1 – An alternate universe Hawkeye who was a shades-wearing SHIELD leather-clad agent. This was the precursor to Clint’s current outfit.

Ultimates Uniform #2 – The same alternate universe character opted for an extreme makeover that included red goggles, a mask that concealed his entire face, and the use of guns while returning to the purple motif.

Current Look – Influenced by both the MCU and the Ultimates comics, the outfit is more a practical uniform than a costume. The only elements that indicate that Hawkeye is a superhero are the purple arrow emblem on his chest and the few time he wears those purple shades.
