Events: Iconic works by Fernando Amorsolo get the Lego treatment in this art exhibit

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – National Artist for Visual Arts Fernando Amorsolo’s masterpieces are set to take on a new form at the Project: Amorsolo art exhibit, where three of his works will be transformed into LEGO brick mosaic art replicas. The exhibit is made possible by the Pinoy Lego Users Group (PinoyLUG), a community of passionate Filipino Lego builders and hobbyists, in cooperation with the Fernando C. Amorsolo Art Foundation, Inc. which aims to preserve and promote the works of the “Grand Old Man of Philippine Art” to more audiences.

The exhibit will be held at the Grand Atrium in Shangri-La Plaza from August 09 to 14, and will feature three iconic Amorsolo works, namely “Bayanihan,” “Dalagang Bukid,” and “Early Traders.” Each work was personally chosen and assembled by PinoyLUG members during the pandemic as these pieces embody themes that are aligned with LEGO’s mission of creating communities that build and share together.

These Lego projects come at no better time as this year marks the 50th anniversary since Amorsolo was recognized as the Philippines’ first National Artist for his masterful use of lighting and backlighting in his portraits and paintings that usually depict everyday life and rural landscapes.

To further promote an atmosphere of play, creativity, and community, Project: Amorsolo will also include fun activities for all mall guests. This includes Lego Free Play and Activity, in partnership with toy store Toys”R”Us, where anyone can join and build their own Lego masterpiece throughout the exhibit period.

Moreover, the exhibit will also host the Painting for Kids Workshop led by the Fernando C. Amorsolo Art Foundation, Inc. on August 13 from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. Registration fee is PHP 800, inclusive of art materials. The same foundation is also set to host the Sketching for Adults Workshop on August 14 from 10:30 am to2:30 pm with a registration fee of PHP 500, inclusive of art materials.

“Lego-lizing” Amorsolo, according to PinoyLUG, isn’t only meant to express the group’s love for the toy bricks as #MasterBuilderofGoodVibes. It also hopes to celebrate the Filipino bayanihan spirit and promote local artistry and creativity.
