Filipino now a Twitter language

GLOBAL, SEPTEMBER 2011: Twitter launched in five new languages last Wednesday, continuing its expansion to reach more users worldwide. Now available in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Hindi, Malay and Filipino, this brings Twitter’s full language support to 17.

Last week, the micro-blogging social platform announced that it has 100 million active users worldwide. Aside from the five new languages, Twitter is also welcoming translators for Dutch, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish, and Turkish. As of late, Twitter has 290,000 volunteer translators.

The additional five languages will make Twitter “more accessible to almost half a billion people around the world.” For Filipinos, who are among the most prolific users of the social networking platform, this latest development could push more members to actively use the service.

A comScore report last February 2010, on the other hand, noted that Filipinos are the most engaged in social networking in the Asia Pacific region, with over 90% of internet users logging in to one or more social networking site.
