Yahoo overtakes Google in July web traffic

GLOBAL – UNITED STATES, AUGUST 23, 2013 – Yahoo beat long-time rival Google in U.S. Internet traffic in July, receiving 196.6 million unique visitors against Google’s 192.3 million, according to comScore’s monthly U.S. web activity ranking.

Since May 2011, this is the first time Yahoo has topped Google, which holds the number one traffic spot for the past two years.

ComScore’s report showed that Yahoo boosted its traffic around 20 percent compared to last year’s traffic. These figures do no include traffic from social networking site Tumblr, which Yahoo recently acquired. Tumblr only ranked 28th in the list, with 38 million views during July.

Since CEO Marissa Mayer (former Google executive) took over Yahoo in July 2012, Yahoo has made significant progress. Yahoo shares have nearly doubled during Mayer’s tenure.

Ed Barton, director of digital media at technology consulting firm Strategy Analytics, said in a CNBC article that changes Mayer has made since becoming CEO, including the acquisition of Tumblr, had proved very positive.

During Mayer’s recent Vogue photo shoot, Mayer told CNN her vision for Yahoo, "Close your eyes and listen to this list. E-mail, maps, weather, news, stock quotes, share photos, group communication, sport scores, games. You’re listening to what people do on their mobile phones. And it sounds like a list of what Yahoo does."

Microsoft, Facebook and AOL rounded out the top five with 180 million, 142 million and 117 page views, respectively. These figures do not include page views from mobile usage and visitors are only counted once in a month, regardless how frequent visitors return to the site.
