Unlogo: bringing power back to the people?

GLOBAL, OCTOBER 11, 2010 – For those tired of product placements in their videos, Unlogo is for you. It aims to be for videos what the pop-up blocker is for web browsers, blurring out a logo or replacing it with an image of the user’s choice. (The CEO’s head, for example.)

Advertisers have no fear (yet), as the project is still in its infancy. Creator Jeff Crouse does not sound like he’s crusading for the eradication of ads. "Although Unlogo has a specific purpose, the code that it is built upon can be used by any artist who wants to do interesting things with non-real time video processing. That is, making what I am calling "smart" video filters." reads Unlogo’s Kickstart profile, "After Unlogo, I plan on cleaning up the code to make it even more general-purpose."

Unlogo is clearly meant for videos on the web, rather than TV or movies, where ad placement is more prevalent. It sounds like a meme waiting to happen, considering the possibilities. Can you imagine Tom Hanks’ ‘Castaway’ without the overabundance of Fed Ex, or the movie ‘The Social Network’ without a single Facebook logo?

This might only be the beginning. Just in case, ad folks better get some new tricks up their sleeve to get their word out.
