Road to Cannes: It’s sunny in Cannes!

Monday, June 22,2009 Cannes, France

Thousands will flock to Cannes, France this week to be part of the world’s largest and most prestigious advertising festival. Despite an expected lower turn out of delegates, Cannes remains to be the greatest celebration of advertising creativity and the most relevant. Terry Savage, Cannes’ Executive Chairman told adobo, “We are expecting over 6,000 delegates about the same number as a few years ago. Last year we had 10,000. This is still a great number.”

“Cannes may be low, but it is definitely not out!” said Andy Greenaway, Asia’s creative head for Saatchi, who will not make it to Cannes this year but hopes to capture a few Lions.

James McTravish, executive creative director of Insight/Grey Africa said upon arriving in Cannes yesterday, “I come to Cannes to get the standards up in Africa.” And added that the festival would be interesting with the recession, “I don’t think the numbers will be up. Some of the work will have to be a little more clever and a little more back-to-basics. Work that actually works as opposed to work that just wins awards.”

Eight juries will judge the 22, 600 pieces of work entered in Film, Print, Outdoor, Design, Interactive, Radio, Sales Promotion, PR, Media, Direct Marketing, Integrated and ground-breaking creative work in the Titanium category. The shortlist for Press, Outdoor, Radio, Media, PR, Direct and Promo are out today. Tonight will be the awards ceremonies for Promo, PR and Direct Lions.

adobo caught Young Lions from the DentsuIndio Philippines Peepo Kulas and Kulas Abrenilla, on their first day in Cannes soaking in the seminars, workshops and TV reels. Both desperately trying to get all the Cannes has to offer into their schedule. “ Cannes is expensive. We got extra money from our parents to survive it”. The privileged young duo, will compete with other young creative in the Film Young Lions which happens later in the week. Let us wish them all the best.

The festival runs for seven days with more than 50 seminars and 20 workshops and four awards ceremonies. On the fringes, there are loads of parties and cafes that offer those on the croissette a chance to meet creative gurus. The “Gutter Bar” across the Martinez Hotel will remain, we expect, ad world’s watering hole until dawn each day.
