MANILA, PHILIPPINES – What better way to celebrate #InternationalWomensDay than a #movienight with our empowered lady tribe over popcorn, ice cream, and ice cold beer! Last March 13, we saw several members of the creative community, including artists, entrepreneurs, and some of our favorite rabble rousers converge at the adobo creative hub to watch the Netflix documentary “Feminists, What Were They Thinking?” The film screening was followed by an inspiring discussion led by Filipina visual artist, Wawi Navarroza, and hub manager Samantha Zarandin. After an evening filled with valuable insights on the value and power of women in this world, not to mention such a rejuvenating exchange of first-hand experiences and wisom shared around the group, it was indeed an empowering night for the adobo community. The next time anyone asks, “Who run the world?” — you know what to say.
About the documentary (Netflix’s ‘Feminists, What Were They Thinking?’)
In 1977, a book of photographs captured an awakening – women shedding the cultural restrictions of their childhoods and embracing their full humanity. Feminists: What Were They Thinking? revisits those photos, those women and those times – and takes aim at our current culture revealing all too vividly the urgent need for continued change. The film offers candid and riveting interviews with women such as Jane Fonda, Gloria Steinem, Lily Tomlin and Judy Chicago tackling topics ranging from identity, abortion, race, childhood and motherhood. A Netflix original documentary directed by Johanna Demetrakas.
About our guest moderator
Wawi Navarroza is a Filipino contempory artist known for her works in photography active both in the Philippines and internationally. Her approach to photography is malleable, with a focus on exploring Self and Surrounding as seen in her notions of contemporary landscape, constructed tableaus and self-portraits. She is represented by Silverlens Galleries and has an upcoming solo exhibition in August 2019. She is also present in the region as an educator where she gives talks, workshops, and mentorships on photography, visual culture, and independent publishing. She has published two books “DOMINION” and “Hunt & Gather, Terraria” and continues to advocate for the printed format through her founding of THOUSANDFOLD in 2015, a platform dedicated to the production and promotion of Philippine contemporary photography and photobooks in Manila, Philippines.
