“Always do your homework, always have a sketchpad” – Leo Burnett’s Dante Dizon in Raw School

THE PHILIPPINES, MARCH 9, 2012: Dubbed as the local advertising scene’s “Hipster King” by his former colleague at Leo Burnett JP Cuison, Raw School 2011’s seventh speaker Dante Dizon reminded young creatives to never stop trying bringing their ideas to life. “Some work, some don’t, but the thing is that you try,” he said.

Dizon, who is creative director cum jewelry artist cum biker, highlighted the importance of always taking down notes, doodling, and taking photos. “You can’t trust your memory all the time. Always do your homework, always have a sketchpad.” Note-taking or sketching, he said, is the “most direct translation of your ideas” into a tangible form.

“Creatives must always be hungry for new stuff,” Dizon conitnued. As part of a highly creative industry, it is important to continue on “daydreaming and doodling” because these can fuel new ideas, which in turn become profitable concepts. “Imagine being paid to daydream and doodle.”

“Nothing beats the feeling of getting your hands dirty and doing something that is not through a PC,” Dizon added. He said that the reason why books and other printed material never go out of style is because they are touchable and are always ready for your reference.

The most important thing, however, is to take a break and having a good time to refresh his mind and get new ideas. “When I can’t think, I walk or ride (my bike),” Dizon said.

Joey Ong, Raw School 2011 headmaster, also took the stage to share a few works that pay careful attention to detail – something that all creatives should exercise, said Ong. He also announced the winners of the “Mash Up” mixed media assignment given by James Bernardo of Bates, and the “Cannes” outdoor assignment by Merlee Jayme.
