Ogilvy Beijing makes virtual dumplings for CNY

ASIA-PACIFIC – CHINA, FEBRUARY 11, 2013 – Are traditions still relevant in the age of apps and mobile technology? Ogilvy Beijing launched a new iPhone app that spreads the cheer of Chinese New Year by inviting people to share a plate virtual dumplings, a traditional Chinese food eaten during celebrations to usher in prosperity for the New Year.

The free ‘CNY Fortune Dumplings’ app is an interactive and social app that prompts users to prepare virtual dumplings. With the swipe of a finger and a shake of their mobile devices, users can roll the dumpling dough, fill it with their choice of three ingredients: prosperity, harmony or gratification; seal the dumplings; boil it and serve. After the virtual dumplings are cooked, users can write their own messages as Chinese New Year wishes to accompany their plate of freshly cooked dumplings and share it with their friends and family online on Chinese microblog Sina Weibo.

An updated version of the app that allows sharing on Twitter will be launched soon after.

“During Chinese New Year, family and friends like to gather together to make, share and eat dumplings as tradition,” said Shenan Chuang, CEO of O&M, Greater China. “But sometimes people aren’t able to be near their loved ones for the holiday. So we wanted to play off on this special tradition in a way that would bring some surprising fun to all those celebrating the New Year – near and far.”

Ogilvy Beijing’s ‘CNY Fortune Dumplings’ app is available in English and simplified Chinese. It’s now downloadable through the App Store and is compatible with iOS 5.0 and later.
