Digital: Turning dreams into streams with the Kumu Creators Academy

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Social entertainment platform Kumu has launched the country’s first-ever professional livestreaming course in the country: the Kumu Creators Academy. This free three-month mentorship program hopes to foster a new generation of content creators who are ready to make a mark on the digital world. The academy is designed to provide aspiring creators with everything they need to become not only the best, but the most authentic streamers they can be.

Mafae Yunon-Belasco, head of the academy, excitedly said that “Kumu Creators Academy has built great momentum in sparking confidence within streamers from all over the world. Now that they have a safe space and new authentic connections through the program, more and more creators are eager to join in on the action. We have over 3,000 graduates already and are rapidly growing our alumni number every month.”

Like any good school, it’s a community for creators to learn, build connections, and motivate one another in their journeys. Throughout the course, kumu aspires to impart its values of collaboration, leadership, and connection. True to kumu’s passion for forming authentic connections, the academy aims to teach that the best connections are formed when you are your truest self. And that in streaming, beyond getting thousands of views and likes, you can share your greatest passions with others, have a platform that you can use for good, and create the impact that you want to make.

The beginnings of the academy

Every day, many people join kumu aspiring to become livestreamers. The platform has seen a growing number of newbies who are eager to go live but need a bit of direction. “The Kumu Creators Academy’s inspiration is rooted in the rising number of newbies on the app who are seeking guidance in discovering who they are and what kind of content they want to put out,” says Yunon-Belasco.

As students go through workshops, one-on-one sessions, collaborative team exercises and more, they get to stretch their creative muscles and explore different ways of producing content. More than that, it pushes each individual to grow into better versions of themselves every day. Yunon-Belasco adds, “Through the workshops and sessions that we have, we see the immense amount of growth each of our students undergo in coming out of their shells and being their authentic selves online.”

How the course works

Joining the academy doesn’t cost a thing! But, you do have to show that you have the passion and the dedication by reaching Mango Level 3 on the app to be qualified. To reach Mango Level 3, you must earn a certain amount of kurot points, which you can gain by livestreaming or dropping virtual gifts.

In the holistic three-month course, you’ll get to connect with and learn from notable and successful creators from various fields through workshops. With different personalities, perspectives, and approaches to creativity, they each help you find your passion and cultivate your craft in unique ways. On helping creators navigate roadblocks, Yunon-Belasco mentions that “Some of the common struggles we see a lot of are burn out and being creative with content. Kumu Creator’s Academy supports time management and fun activities to help streamers experiment and try new ways of being on Kumu.”

Of course, you’ll also have “classmates,” people who are on the same path as you and who you can exchange knowledge, wisdom, and ideas with. As you discover your why alongside each other, you get to form genuine relationships and collaborative communities. After graduating, you’ll be paired with a mentor who will provide you with guidance that’s aligned with whatever you want to pursue on kumu. So far, the academy has seen students come out of their shells and grow immensely to be their most authentic selves, and the number of alumni is growing rapidly every month.
