Volcanoes too hot to handle? Bench billboards removed from EDSA-Guadalupe on mayor’s request

PHILIPPINES – JULY 8, 2011 – The Philippine Volcanoes rugby team may be in Australia, but they could be feeling the heat Down Under. The team’s underwear billboards done in-house by Bench have been removed from EDSA-Guadalupe in Mandaluyong City just over a week after rising over the river bisected by the metro’s main thoroughfare.

The billboard rolldown was first reported by ABS-CBNnews.com, which quoted Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Abalos as saying that the advertisers have committed to removing the billboards. Abalos requested for the removal after hearing several complaints, including one from Valenzuela City Mayor Sherwin Gatchalian, who found the billboards offensive and not suitable for viewing by children.

As of nightfall on July 7, the billboards were already out of sight. Reactions on the street and online have been mixed, with some applauding and blasting the move.

Whether the ads are immoral or the takedown a sign of double standard against scantily clad men and women, the billboards have generated a good deal of comment. If the adage that there is no such thing as bad publicity, then Bench and the Volcanoes have already made for themselves the support they were asking for.
