Who ruled the January TV ratings race?

PHILIPPINES, FEBRUARY 2011 – ABS-CBN and GMA both claimed television ratings leadership in January, with few changes since 2010. According to Nielsen TV Audience Measurement, GMA ruled in Mega Manila; Kantar Media showed that ABS-CBN was still the nationwide choice.

In January, GMA garnered 7.2 points in Mega Manila channel rating, 2.6 points higher than ABS’ 4.6 and 3.5 points away from TV5’s 3.7 points. Mega Manila comprises 58% of total urban television households nationwide and now covers Batangas and Laguna. In Urban Luzon – 77% percent of television households nationwide – GMA led ABS with 6.8 points in channel rating, up by 1.8 from ABS’ five points; and by 3.3 from TV5’s 3.5.

However, in National Urban Philippines, GMA bows down with 6.4 rating points against ABS-CBN’s 6.5 – too close to call. The Kantar Media stats cited by ABS-CBN for nationwide are similar: an overall audience share of 36% over GMA’s audience share of 34%. On primetime, ABS-CBN dominated Kantar’s nationwide survey, garnering a 40% audience share or nine points higher than GMA’s 31% .

Whether or not the new series Dwarfina and Machete from GMA and Mutya from ABS-CBN debuted strong also depended on whose figures you looked at and where.

The Nielsen TV Audience Measurement has a sample size of 880 homes as compared to Kantar Media’s 770 homes. Nationwide, Nielsen has a total sample size of 2,005 homes compared to 1,370 utilized by Kantar Media.
