Traffic to end trafficking: MTV sets march and concert for Friday May 22

"Exit" doesn’t mean something’s over. For MTV, "exit" is not goodbye, but an ongoing fight against human trafficking.

Globally called MTV EXIT (End Exploitation and Trafficking), the channel’s latest cause-oriented campaign aims to increase prevention of human trafficking.

Earlier this week, MTV Philippines announced a nationwide initiative to fight trafficking through a series of concerts, events, documentaries, music videos. fictional films, websites (www.mtvexit.org) and Public Service Announcements.

Igniting the nationwide string of free concerts is “MTV EXIT Live in Manila”, this 6 p.m. this Friday, May 22, at the Mall of Asia Concert Grounds. Featured talents include Christian Bautista, Gary V, Parokya ni Edgar, Bamboo, Kitchie Nadal and Kamikazee, all of whom have committed their support. Prior to the concert, a group of NGOs will march from Roxas Blvd to Mall of Asia starting at 2 p.m. Fans out there, if you want to please the gods of rock, be one with your favorite artists as they join this crusade and perform in five cities around the country. Check out www.mtvphil.com for concert dates and free tickets.

MTV, "being one of the most influential platforms to reach young people in the country,” as MTV Philippines Marketing & Communications Director Ronald Esguerra puts it, the campaign aims to reach and warn the young people who are both MTv’s core audience and trafficking’s most common victims. Criminal traffickers earn US$10 billion per year through buying and selling human beings — and a majority of their victims come from Asia/Pacific. The documentary ‘TRAPIK,’ narrated by regionally-popular singer Bautista, chronicles the cases of three Asian teenagers, including one girl from the Philippines.

Esguerra adds, “Awareness raising initiatives are only one part in the fight against human trafficking, albeit an important one. However, they will not end trafficking on their own. It is going to take all sectors of society to make a stand against this issue if we are to have a lasting positive impact.”

MTV Exit made its entrance via MTV Europe, landing on Asian shores in 2007.  Its key zones in the region include Indonesia, Nepal, Cambodia, Taiwan and Vietnam.  Social networking site Friendster and GMA-7 have partnered with MTV on this edu-tainment effort.  On Friday May 22, let’s cause traffic to end trafficking!
