OMD and Pulse study reveals screen habits of Malaysians

ASIA-PACIFIC – KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, DECEMBER 2011: In the latest study on device usage in Malaysian households, OMD Malaysia and Pulse Group has found that the average four-member urban household has, on average, 10 different screens such as mobile phones, computers, TVs and tablets. The more devices being added to the households, the more attached consumers are to screens, as shown by the latest poll result.

The online survey gathered opinions and view from 304 Malaysians across Peninsular and East Malaysia in early November.

"It is not uncommon to see people using their mobile devices all the time these days; couples playing on their individual phones while eating out, parents pacifying kids with iPad or gaming devices on dining tables. It has come to an age that we do not consume media, but the media consume us," Andreas Vogiatzakis, managing director of Omnicom Media Group pointed out.

"Relationships could suffer. This has prompted us to look into the matter, trying to understand the relationship that we have developed with the devices and to gauge the impact they have on our relationship," added Bob Chua, CEO of Pulse Group PLC.

While 58% of the respondents still see TV as the shared screen, only 8% agreed that they are most attached to it and the rest are closest to their other personal devices. More than half of the surveyed respondents testified to spending more time looking at screens than communicating face to face. However 58% claimed to have better family relationship with the use of devices.

Social media plays a substantial role in gathering people together virtually. More than 80% said they learned about social happenings and have become more alert via social media. More than 45% are likely to support a cause, movement or petition raised through social networks.

Other results include:
43% check on their mobile phone every 30 minutes or more frequently
The mobile phone is the first and the last object seen in a day by 47% of respondents
15% would still rise from sleep to check on an incoming SMS or notification
