Philippine movie and TV classification board to employ new rating for programs

THE PHILIPPINES, FEBRUARY 3, 2012 – After changing the TV ratings system late in 2011, the Philippines’ Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) will begin implementing the new “SPG” (strict parental guidance) rating for television programs starting February 9, pursuant to Memorandum Circular No. 12-2011.

The SPG rating has been deferred until further notice from the board last October, while the revised G and PG ratings have been implemented at the outset. Programs with the SPG rating may contain more serious topics and themes, such as love scenes or dialogues with harsh language, which may not be advisable for children’s viewing except under the very vigilant guidance and presence of a parent or guardian.

The implementation of the new rating will also include an “infomercial” to further raise public awareness on the new ratings system, as well as emphasize the importance of exercising caution and vigilance over the viewing habits of children. The advertisement will feature showbiz family Zoren Legaspi, Carmina Villaroel, and their children Peter and Cassandra.

Prior to the revision and implementation of the new ratings system, the MTRCB conducted several dialogues with representatives of television networks and other stakeholders of the industry. The protection and development of the youth’s welfare as well as the broadcast media’s freedom of expression have been taken into consideration during these talks.  The Board is also trying to formalize the support of various television networks to the new rating system of the Board through a Memorandum of Agreement.

A press conference will be held on February 09 at 2 pm at the MTRCB Board Room, 4th floor, MTRCB Building, #18, Timog Ave., Quezon City regarding the new TV ratings system. For inquiries and details on the press conference, please call Ms. Tootie Lorenzo at tel. no. 376-7380/83 loc. 104
