BBDO/Proximity asks Singaporeans to make a pledge and support Special Olympians

ASIA-PACIFIC – SINGAPORE, DECEMBER 2011: BBDO/Proximity Singapore has teamed up with the Special Olympics for Facebook apps that allow Singaporeans to support their local athletes and create greater awareness for the cause.

The two applications lets users make a pledge for Singapore’s Special Olympians, both in cash or in kind by spreading awareness through likes, tweets, status updates and blog posts of quick facts that they can share. These can be accessed through www.facebook.com/specialolympicssingapore

Singapore currently has 1,500 athletes looking for the nation’s support. At the 2011 World Games in Athens, the Singapore team won an amazing 37 medals – 12 gold, 13 silver and 12 bronze.

Commenting at the launch event, Ho Lian Shi, Head of Digital at BBDO/Proximity, said “I am completely amazed and inspired by their skill and passion. They have taught me a little bit about the strength of the human spirit – if you give something your all, you can achieve whatever you set out to do, it doesn’t matter who or what you are.”

Edwin Lim, Operations Manager at the Special Olympics said “I can’t wait to see people make their pledges online and start talking about the achievements of our Special Olympians. I hope that Singaporeans will not only pledge their support, but also volunteer to come down, watch and take part in their training sessions. Here they will experience their incredible spirit and be able to see what amazing individuals these athletes truly are.”

The Special Olympics is a global organization, providing sports training and athletic competition in Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual difficulties. Across Asia-Pacific there are 915,000 athletes taking part in 16,000 events annually, with the number of participants increasing by almost 20% each year.
