A portrait of the mobile Filipino

PHILIPPINES, MAY 18, 2011 – Custom research company TNS revealed to the media yesterday the results of a global study on the mobile platform in a presentation by its research services director, Galex Cabrera. It was also the first time the Philippine office of TNS shared their findings, with special emphasis on Philippine mobile use,  to the press.

The Philippine findings were Metro Manila-based since the capital region is the center of mobile internet activity in the country. 500 face-to-face interviews were conducted with respondents ranging from 16-60 years old, across different classes, and genders. It was found that 81% own a mobile phone; the DVD player is second as a gadget-need. Filipinos in Metro Manila are also more likely to have more than one SIM, setting them apart from the rest of mono-SIM Asia.

The country, known a global texting capital, uses mobile somewhat differently from the rest of the region. The mobile phone is the preferred device for managing schedules and personal entertainment. The mobile usage of the calendar function is higher than the global average, with 84% relevance in Metro Manila, as opposed to the 35% of Emerging Asia and 49% Global relevance. Entertainment options such as a camera, the easy downloading of music and apps, and the video recording feature are the top incentives that drive handset choices.

Nokia remains strong among mobile phone brands, with 70% of Metro Manila owning a Nokia phone. But compared to last year, Nokia’s popularity has dropped by 10%, with Sony Ericsson and Samsung mobile phone brands gaining momentum. Respondents also said that they were willing to pay more for their next mobile phone purchase. For that big purchase, Filipinos in Metro Manila resort to digital references by canvassing features, prices, and other information online.

“Research results of Mobile Life 2011 highlighted that as a ‘static’ functionality such as SMS and still imaging become commoditized, growth will be driven through further demand for social functionality and new demands for video calling, streaming, and sharing services,” explained Gary de Ocampo, TNS Managing Director.
