UGL’s Aids Tecson: Part-time dreamer, full-time geek

Samsung Philippines’ Life 2.0 campaign coinciding with the release of  its  Samsung Galaxy Tab WiFi features individuals from different fields. Aids Tecson, founder of post-production house Underground Logic and PinoyAndroid.com.ph, talks about the tech in his life.

What does Aids Tecson do for a living? Switch on your television and about a third of the local TV commercials you would encounter has passed through the editing suites of his company, Underground Logic.

Aids founded Underground Logic (UGL), a top post-production house in Manila which specializes in editing, 3D animation, and  high-end visual effects for television commercials and films. He started the business with a few partners and small team of six people 12 years ago, building his portfolio over time, and slowly gaining the trust of a good number of clients in the advertising industry. Today, Underground Logic houses a combined 50-strong creative, marketing and operations team, with several big projects under its belt.

The secret, he says, is quality work and genuine care for clients and the team.

Inside Aids’ industrially designed office houses a number of interesting, not to mention high tech tools for work and play. This includes a handful of Command and Conquer and Frozen Throne CDs, a top of the line digital SLR cameras complete with lenses and other accessories, and a trusty computer with several browser tabs open, mostly about photography and Android. “I’m a big Android fan,” he says, “It works harmoniously with the workstations which I’ve used from the very beginning in my job as an editor. People think I like Android because I’m a geek, but for me, Android is a lifestyle.”

It is common thinking that the standard black QWERTY phone used for PUSH e-mail is sufficient to run the enterprise while Mr. CEO is on a business trip—the only drawback was the fact that some “standard” phones were rather boring and not fit for the colorful enterprise Aids built. “I waited for the right device,” Aids said. He needed something that is compact, ready with the basic word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications, something with unsurpassed multi-media capabilities, and most importantly, the ability to consume offline and online content the way he pleased, which only came in the form of the Galaxy Tab.

With the fast turnover rate of technology and work schedules, keeping up to date 24/7 was a challenge for him until he found the perfect tool for his work-centric lifestyle.

This is not to say, though, that Aids is all work and no play. He is a big Android fan, or a Fandroid for short, and works on a few things on the side, such as www.PinoyAndroid.com.ph, a blog, forum, and local resource for Android users in the Philippines. Do note, though, that he is not just an administrator or an active user—Aids is actually the co-founder of this resource, which he brought to life both for fellow Android addicts and more importantly, Android newbies.

He now enjoys a variety of free apps in his Samsung Galaxy Tab which are readily available from the Android market such as widgets, SMS schedulers, recipe resources, photography tools, and browsers.

“I like getting information instantly and I use my Galaxy Tab a lot in terms of browsing. With other devices, I would mostly browse the web in mobile mode, which then prevents me from seeing the true intention of the content developer. Multi-media rich content such as Adobe Flash is usually left out to make way for less powerful devices and mobile operating systems. However, with the power of the Galaxy Tab, and at the same time using one of my favorite apps, the Dolphin browser HD, I get to see web pages like I would on my desktop, in its full multi-media rich glory.” he narrates.

Having a Galaxy Tab makes basic everyday things more convenient. Aids has found a use for the most basic Galaxy Tab apps, from casual photography, social networking, to Word Feud. “I also view a lot of interesting YouTube videos and, using the Android app Tubemate, I can download them directly onto the Galaxy Tab to show friends or clients at a later time without having to reconnect to the internet to redownload the video,” he says. Aids dreams of having an application that could do some basic video editing, as the currently available Android apps are somehow lacking in this department.

Like every popular online content creator and consumer, Aids loves his data, and nothing gives him as much control of it as the Galaxy Tab. He calls it “content on demand,” because today’s techno users want everything instant. Now content can be managed in an all-in-one device.

As a serious hobby, Aids delves into landscape photography. “Landscape photography takes a lot of time and effort, not to mention a mountain of patience. During photography trips, if I can come home with about 15 to 20 good images, then I’m happy. Now I conveniently use my tab for my hobby, from plotting the path of the sun, to showing my portfolio on the Tab’s gorgeous Gorilla Glass enforced Super TFT-LCD. I mostly just leave my laptop at home. If I need a quick photography fix, I also play around with a wide variety of Android photography apps, which gives me a lot of options in terms of photo processing styles.”

“The Galaxy Tab can be easily integrated into your upgraded lifestyle: download music from a Cloud, play scrabble with a friend or a random person, consume, and control free content that is readily available online for everyone. These are the things you should not be paying for,” he concludes.
